LOTHIAN, Md. – On April 17, 2018 at approximately 11:23 p.m. officers responded to a two vehicle crash on Mt. Zion Marlboro Road near Greenock Road in Lothian. Investigation showed that a Mercury SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on Mt. Zion Marlboro Road. As the driver approached a bend in the roadway, he lost control, struck a tree, and spun back into the travel portion of the roadway. A short time later, a Pontiac that was also southbound on Mt. Zion Marlboro Road struck the Mercury that was disabled in the roadway.
The driver of the Mercury was flown to PG Trauma with possible life threatening injuries. The driver of the Pontiac was not injured. The preliminary cause of the crash appears to be excessive speed, and failing to remain in a single lane by the driver of the Mercury. It is also believed that alcohol use may have been a contributing factor. The Traffic Safety Section is handing the investigation and any charges will be after review by the States Attorney.
