LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A local tattoo shop is turning ink into impact this spring, inviting the community to support shelter animals through a unique, story-driven fundraiser designed to connect art with adoption.

“Misfits for Mutts,” a two-day walk-in tattoo and piercing event hosted by Blue Scarab Tattoos and Body Piercing, will take place April 18–19, benefiting St. Mary’s County Animal Services.

Organizers say the event goes far beyond a typical flash tattoo weekend. Instead, it’s designed to immerse visitors in the mission of helping local shelter pets find homes and funding the care they need in the meantime.

“This is NOT a normal flash event,” organizers shared in a Facebook post. “We’re pulling together the best pet-themed designs we can come up with, pet-inspired jewelry options, and filling the shop with an Adoption Gallery featuring photos and stories of the animals currently waiting for homes.” Their shop is located at 22675 Washington St., Suite 200, Leonardtown, Md., 20650.

That “Adoption Gallery” will serve as the emotional centerpiece of the event, giving attendees the chance to connect with animals currently up for adoption while they wait their turn in the chair and possibly even meet their future pet.

The fundraiser will feature $125 pet-themed flash tattoos and $30 piercings, with a portion of every service donated directly to support shelter animals. Attendees can also receive a discount by bringing new, unopened donation items such as pet food, cat litter, or blankets.

Organizers emphasized accessibility and community participation, noting the event will be strictly walk-in only and operate on a first-come, first-served basis. A sign-up sheet will allow participants to explore Leonardtown while they wait, with staff contacting them when it’s their turn.

Beyond fundraising, the event reflects a deeper purpose.

“We truly have a chance to make a real difference here,” organizers said. “We want this to be big, not for us, but for them.”

The effort is being coordinated in partnership with AROO Animal Rescue & Outreach Org, further strengthening its connection to the local animal welfare community.

Adoptions facilitated through the event will be handled by St. Mary’s County Animal Services, with the hope that increased visibility will lead to more animals finding permanent homes.

As excitement builds, organizers are encouraging the public to spread the word and show up ready to support.

“Grab your friends, spread the word, and start planning now,” they said. “Let’s come together and make this something truly awesome.”

With art, compassion, and community at its core, “Misfits for Mutts” aims to prove that even a small act — whether a tattoo, a piercing, or a donation — can help change an animal’s life.
