Lauren Renee Scott
Annapolis, MD – Anne Arundel County authorities reported June 15 that a motorist deemed at fault for a motor vehicle collision that killed a young St. Mary’s County couple Valentine’s Day has been charged with two counts of homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.
An Anne Arundel County Police Department (AACPD) news release stated the defendant, identified as Lauren Renee Scott, 27 of North Beach, was also charged with two counts each of homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, negligent manslaughter with an automobile, criminally negligent manslaughter by motor vehicle; plus single counts of reckless driving, negligent driving and failure to remain right of center.
Police said Scott was arrested Tuesday, June 14 at her mother’s home in North Beach. She is being held on $675,000 bond pending a bail review.
The victims, Daniel and Kayla Amos, both 21 of California (pictured, left), died in the head-on collision on Route 2 (Solomons Island Road) near Swallow Lane in Edgewater, during the afternoon of Feb. 14. The couple had been celebrating their six-month wedding anniversary. They were returning home when the crash occurred. Police reported Scott was driving a Toyota Camry that crossed the centerline and struck the Amos’ Honda Civic.
“Traffic Safety subsequently assumed responsibility for the crash investigation and found the primary cause was Ms. Scott’s failure to remain right of the centerline,” the AACPD report stated. “The investigation, closely coordinated with the [Anne Arundel County] State’s Attorney’s Office, also found probable cause that Ms. Scott was driving under the influence of a drug (marijuana and opiates) and/or controlled dangerous substance, which directly contributed to the crash and the subsequent deaths of Mr. and Mrs. Amos.”
If convicted of all charged and given maximum sentence, Scott could spend 38 years behind bars.
The Amos’ deaths touched both the Calvert and St. Mary’s communities. The couple was very active at Chesapeake Church in Huntingtown.
