The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal, with the assistance of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating two fires that occurred over the weekend at Flag Ponds State Park in Lusby. According to Dfm. Melissa Bean, park employees discovered the damage Tuesday, Oct. 30 shortly before 9 a.m. Bean’s investigation determined the blazes had been deliberately set. “Unknown suspect(s) intentionally set fire to two separate out-buildings sometime over the weekend” stated Bean, adding that the fires “extinguished themselves.”

The investigation determined that the fires originated in an exterior walkway of one building and the interior of the second structure.

Damage is estimated at $30,000.

Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the vicinity of the park or has any information is asked to contact the state fire marshal’s Southern Region Office at 443-550-6834.
