INDIAN HEAD, Md. – Naval Support Facility (NSF) Indian Head is holding a contest for employees and local residents to determine the theme for the base’s 125th Anniversary.  The base would like suggestions to tag the significant occasion of celebrating 125 years of the Navy at Indian Head.

Those who’d like to submit a theme idea should send it by email to jeron.hayes@navy.mil, by mail to NSF Indian Head MWR, 4260 Steve’s Way, Bldg. D-328, Indian Head, MD 20640, or entries may be dropped at the Indian Head Town Hall night deposit drop.  The winner will be determined by the 125th Anniversary planning team and will receive a certificate of recognition for their efforts.  Deadline for theme ideas is May 15, 2015.

A number of celebratory events are being planned for the anniversary, including a family festival on Saturday, Sept. 26 from noon – 6 p.m. at the Indian Head Village Green Pavilion.  The event will include static displays and historic memorabilia from base commands, live music from the Navy Band Cruisers, a performance by the Naval District Washington Ceremonial Guard, children’s games and activities, food sales and more.  Planning is still underway and more events will be announced soon.

NSF Indian Head was founded in 1890 as the Naval Proving Ground and was the Navy’s first established presence in Southern Maryland.  The base gradually moved away from the simple proving of guns and armor to include standardization of shells and powder.  The “Proving Ground” eventually became the “Powder Factory” and the facility shifted from guns to ammunition, research and explosives.  Today the base maintains its mission as a center of excellence for multiple Navy missions and is home to several commands with diverse missions and personnel from all branches of the service.
