
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland Baseball Team (0-1) kicked off the 2024 campaign with a non-conference matchup against the Marlin of Virginia Wesleyan University (3-3). The Seahawks fell to the Marlins, 11-5.
How It Happened
- Chase O’Dell provided the Seahawks with their first run of the year with an RBI single. Derrick Booker got on base with a lead-off single in the top of the first and later discord from the second off of the O’Dell RBI. St. Mary’s kept the momentum with a Cole Tarleton double that advanced Chase O’Dell to third. O’Dell would go on to reach home after a Trevor Smith sacrifice fly. The Seahawks kept their 2-0 lead all the way through the fifth inning.
- Virginia Wesleyan would take their first lead of the day after six straight runs over the course of the fifth and sixth innings. Kyle Catanzaro provided the Seahawks with some much-needed offense in the top of the seventh. Catanzaro drove a double down the line that scored Adrian Auber. Corey Brown would go on to score later on in the inning off of a George Berbakos RBI. Catanzaro would find his way home as well, capitalizing on a wild pitch. The Marlins would still hold on to a 6-5 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
- The Marlins went on to score the final five runs of the game and took home an 11-5 victory.
