WALDORF MD. — The Blue Crabs’ offense quickly came to life in the series opener against the New Britain Bees banging out 16 hits in their 9-6 victory.

D’arby Myers and Eric Garcia hit back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the first.  After Bryant Nelson dropped down a sacrifice bunt, Angel Sanchez stepped to the dish and lashed a singled to center to score both runs and give the Blue Crabs a 2-0 lead.

In the second, Gary Brown lined a base hit to center, stole second, and came home when Myers singled to right. In the third, Bryan Nelson helped the Crabs pad their lead by hitting a leadoff double on the first pitch of his at bat, and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Michael Snyder, giving Southern Maryland a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth the Bees put up their first run of the game with a single by third baseman Jovan Rosa and a double by designated hitter Cole Garner. The Blue Crabs answered in the bottom of the inning with another insurance run to make the score 5-1.

New Britain scored at least one run in every inning from the fourth to the eighth. In the fifth the Bees scored two on a pair of singles, a walk, and a double. In the sixth they put another run on the board when centerfielder Michael Crouse doubled to left field and shortstop Jonathan Roof singled to center.

The Blue Crabs made the score 7-4 in the bottom of the sixth when Myers reached first on an error by the third baseman, stole second, and reached third on the next play. Nelson hit an RBI single to score Myers, and Michael Snyder doubled to left to score Nelson.

In the top of the seventh and eighth innings the Bees scored one run, closing in on the Crabs 7-6 lead. However, Michael Snyder hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth, making the score 9-6. Cody Eppley entered in the top of the ninth to earn his 22nd save of the season.
