Rootbound Farms Brings La Plata Together With New Market Supporting Local Vendors

LA PLATA, Md. — What started as a small front-yard regenerative garden has continued to grow in La Plata, as Rootbound Farms prepares to open its latest venture — a local market and provisions shop — on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 106 St. Mary’s Ave.

The market will operate as a small provisions shop, offering a rotating selection of locally sourced food, pantry items and everyday essentials.

Rootbound Farms is owned by Woody DeLauder and his wife, Janine, who run a sustainable farm in La Plata focused on fresh, in-season produce and local goods.

The soft opening marks another step forward for the local business, which first built a following through the La Plata Farmers Market before expanding into a storefront and now a community-focused market space offering a wider range of goods.

DeLauder said the market will carry both its own produce and items from other local farms, with a focus on sourcing as much as possible from Charles County growers. He added that all products currently come from farms within the county, with about five farms already involved.

Customers can expect fresh-picked strawberries from Shlagel Farms, seasonal produce from his farm, baked goods from a variety of local vendors and a range of locally sourced items on opening day, with more being added as the season continues. He has also relocated his online store distribution center to this location, allowing operations to run more efficiently in one place. He and his wife said they are happy to be open and take this next step, now joined by one additional employee helping run the day-to-day operations.

At the time of the announcement, local favorites expected to be featured include:

Shoppers will find a mix of everyday staples and specialty items, including soaps, lotions, deodorants, salves, balms and laundry soap, along with coffee, spice blends, baked goods, bagels, sourdough bread, jams, honey and fresh produce. Offerings are expected to rotate regularly based on what is in season and available from local partners.

The space will include a small children’s area, creating a more comfortable, family-friendly shopping experience for parents.

Initial hours of operation will be:

  • Sunday: Closed
  • Monday: Closed
  • Tuesday through Friday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Rootbound Farms Market and Local Provisions is located at 106 St. Mary’s Ave. in La Plata, continuing the business’s growth from backyard beginnings to a growing presence in the local small business community.
