
POMFRET, Md. — A 25-year-old man was flown to a trauma center Monday, Sept. 29, 2025, after a black SUV slammed into a tree and burst into flames shortly after 12:30 p.m. near the 4100 block of Middletown Road in Pomfret
Officials on the scene indicate the unrestrained driver was reportedly pulled from the vehicle by a bystander moments before it became fully engulfed. Rescue crews from Charles County arrived within minutes and found the driver with serious injuries.
EMS requested a medevac and minutes later, Maryland State Police Trooper 7 landed at a nearby baseball field at Billingsley Elementary School to meet paramedics.
The patient was flown to MedStar Trauma Center in Washington with critical injuries, including pelvic trauma and a wrist injury. Responders noted he was drifting in and out of consciousness and unable to recall the incident.
Units remained on the scene for more than an hour to extinguish the fire and clear debris.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
