Prince Frederick, MD – Calvert County Alert, a notification system that advises residents of emergency-related information via cell phones, landline telephones and e-mail, may now include the Town of Chesapeake Beach. On Tuesday, Jan. 13 the Calvert County Commissioners voted unanimously to sign an agreement between county government and the municipality allowing the town to utilize the mass notification system.
“Any use of the town’s operations will be allowed through secondary agreement with Everbridge Incorporated,” Calvert Emergency Management Division Chief John R. “Bobby” Fenwick stated in a memo to the commissioners. “Calvert County will benefit by the town encouraging their residents to sign up for Calvert County Alert to ensure we have the most robust notification system possible.”
Under the terms of the agreement, the permission to allow the town to use the system comes with no additional cost to the county. The pact also states county government will work with the town’s “designated authorized users” to resolve any technical or administrative issues related to the system.
The commissioners confirmed that staff will also follow up with the Town of North Beach to get that municipality to agree to a similar pact with the vendor, Everbridge Inc.
Commissioner Tom Hejl [R-At-Large], the retired assistant sheriff of Calvert County, urged residents to also sign up for Nixle Alerts, a notification system that provides residents with information about ongoing road traffic issues and missing people.
Hejl said residents can sign up for Nixle on the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office web site. The service is offered free by a U.S.-based corporation to police agencies throughout the country.
Appointments approved
The commissioners voted unanimously to appoint three new members to the Calvert County Environmental Commission. The new members are Ron Klauda, Peter Vogt and Richard Romer.
The commissioners also appointed Marcia Claggett, a resident of the Third Election District, as an alternate on the Calvert Board of Appeals. Claggett fills the vacancy created when Steve Waugh resigned from the panel following his election to the Maryland Senate.
