PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Emergency services training and education expert MissionCIT outlined its goals at the June 9 Board of County Commissioners meeting in Calvert, with the hope of completing a final report by December and starting implementation in January of next year.

MissionCIT provides EMS education, fire service training, assessment and professional services for first responders and was brought in by the county to develop a long-term Fire, Rescue and EMS Master Plan that includes:

  • Increased efficiency
  • Improved operational and administrative effectiveness
  • Enhanced or expanded services
  • Alignment with national and regional standards
  • Reduced costs
  • Standardized services and programs
  • Evaluation of needs as they relate to industrial occupancies within Calvert County
  • Improved Insurance Services Office rating score

Currently, the organization is completing site visits and data-collection efforts, including scheduling focus groups. Once this phase is complete, it will analyze data and begin drafting the plan. The first draft is expected in October, with a presentation of the final report in December.

Commissioner Earl “Buddy” Hance said that this service was important as the county looks to build new firehouses, buy more equipment and transition to a part-professional and part-volunteer system.

Chief Frank Edwards, senior director of strategic services at MissionCIT, said that they’ve worked with several other counties and municipalities that are undergoing this transition process and can help counties navigate these “growing pains.”

“There’s a continuum of key factors that drive that transition,” Edwards said.
