Calvert County Chamber of Commerce Beacon of Light awards 2025 winners

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — The Calvert County Chamber of Commerce celebrated business in the community at its annual “Beacon of Light” awards ceremony on Dec. 5.

This special event recognizes individuals, businesses and organizations that have made a remarkable impact on the community — the “beacons of light” who go above and beyond to make Calvert County shine.

Members of the community were able to nominate businesses for the award. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Kathryn Maney read out the nominations as she presented the awards, spotlighting the incredible impact each business made on the community.

The winner of the 2025 Legacy Beacon of Light Award was Julie Fuller, who works as a Realtor in Calvert County.

Julie Fuller

Fuller has been “a shining example of leadership, service and compassion in Calvert County. She has been involved in many charitable and civic organizations over the years; the Calvert County Economic Advisory Committee, Project Echo Fundraising Committee, Calvert County Community Partners, and as the president of the Board of Directors for Project Echo.

Fuller also serves as a delivery driver for the Lusby food drop and is engaged in her church and the Southern Maryland Association of Realtors, serving in multiple roles. Maney called out how Fuller always shows up to events to spread positivity and said her impact has a “ripple effect” that helps the whole community.

“She demonstrates what it means to lead with both heart and purpose,” Maney said.

Bulrushes Cafe

Bulrushes Cafe is a local restaurant owned by Bobby and Wendy Bonner, also the owners of Caney Creek Catering. Bulrushes was praised by Maney for its commitment to numerous causes in the community, especially when it comes to issues affecting veterans and first responders.

In addition to monetary contributions, Bulrushes offers free breakfasts for veterans and first responders at its cafe, with the help of business sponsors. Manager Valerie “Val” Grogan accepted the award on behalf of the Bonners, who love to travel and were “passing through the Panama Canal” during the ceremony.
