PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – Calvert County Sheriff Mike Evans is proud to announce ten new officers have joined the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office after their graduation from the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy (SMCJA) on November 5, 2021. The officers were among a total of 39 candidates –13 with St. Mary’s County and 16 with Charles County.
Director of the SMCJA, Captain Bobby Jones, welcomed graduates and their families and spoke about the 30 week training program that started April 10, 2021 and included over 1,000 hours of instruction.
Charles County graduate Officer Haley Holt performed the National Anthem as members from the Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s Honor Guard presented the colors. Charles County graduate Officer Trey Brown was the class speaker and spoke about the graduate’s journey to success.
During the ceremony, SMCJA instructors presented awards to graduates who excelled in various categories:
Michael Pagano (St. Mary’s) won the Physical Fitness Award
Gary Owen Jr. (Charles) won the Firearms Award
Sean Hendrickson (Calvert) won the Emergency Vehicle Operations Award
Toni Hunsinger (St. Mary’s) won the Scholastic Award
Charles County Deputy Trey Brown received the Steve Allen Award, named after one of the original founders of the SMCJA who died of cancer several years ago. The Steve Allen Award recipient demonstrates attributes of leadership, initiative, motivation and compassion throughout their attendance at the academy.
