CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. — Calvert County is joining together to celebrate the 101st birthday of a special resident, James Ruckert of Chesapeake Beach.
Ruckert is a longtime resident of Chesapeake Beach. Having just turned 101, this puts his birth year at 1925 — meaning he’s witnessed countless historical events and seen dramatic technological advances in his lifetime.
His birthday celebrations included balloons and a citation presented by the Board of County Commissioners. And hopefully some cake, although The BayNet could not confirm what desserts were present at the celebration.
Ruckert worked in environmental education in Prince George’s County Public Schools. He also served as an assistant track coach from 1951 to 1971, mentoring countless young athletes. Ruckert retired from teaching in 1983.
According to a Facebook post shared by the Calvert County Government, Ruckert has pledged a generous bequest to the James A. Ruckert Special Collections Endowment at the University Libraries, demonstrating his commitment to education and bettering the lives of youth. The endowment supports the preservation and promotion of special collections in the R. Lee Hornbake Library. In recognition of his generosity, the foyer and reception area will be renamed the Audrey Armistead Ruckert Reception Foyer in honor of his late wife.
Calvert County’s oldest resident, Sue Switzer, also celebrated her 106th birthday this January.
