PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County Public Schools will have to wait a little longer to see an approved FY26 budget for the general fund, food services fund and the school construction fund.

In a 0-5 vote, the Board of Education rejected the initial budget presented by Chief Financial Officer Scott Johnson and said they hadn’t had adequate time to fully review the budget since they’d just received the documents that morning.

Board member Paul Harrison called out the lack of additional school resource officers in the budget, and board member Melissa Goshorn asked to see a more detailed breakdown of changes from last year.

Johnson explained that the budget could be modified and revised as needed. As of 9:15 a.m. on June 12, Maryland had not yet released the FY26 amounts to public school districts in the state, so the budget might require modifications based on the amount available for Calvert.

The Board of County Commissioners approved the county budget at their meeting on Tuesday, June 10. The Board of Education has 30 days from that time to approve the initial budget.

The BOE also needs to vote to approve the budget before July, when their software goes offline for updates, and set a June 30 deadline to reevaluate.
