Tuesday proved to be Carol Millerโs special day. Unfortunately, Miller spent Sept. 25 in the hospital. It was her protรฉgรฉ, Susan K. Shryock Ude, who stepped forward to accept Millerโs award as Calvertโs โMost Beautiful.โ Miller was one of 13 individuals nominated for the 2012 โCalvert You are Beautifulโ honor, which recognizes the communityโs volunteers. Any citizen or organization may nominate an individual for the honor. A panel of judges then selects one of the nominees as Calvertโs Most Beautiful.
Calvert County Commissionersโ President Gerald W. โJerryโ Clark [R] said the ceremony is one of his favorite annual events. โYou all go the extra mile and take the extra time,โ said Clark to the honorees who gathered with family and friends at Calvert Pines Senior Center Auditorium for the afternoon ceremony. โYou all make Calvert County a beautiful place to call home.โ
โWe [commissioners] are always impressed and amazed,โ said Commissioner Susan Shaw [R]. โWe live in a very generous place.โ
Among the nominated were individuals who give considerable time time to the local hospice, service clubs, dog kennels, adult day care, the Red Cross, the Girl Scouts, Calvert Marine Museum, the countyโs master gardener program and Little League.
Miller, the American Legion Post 274 Auxiliary president, was nominated by Nate Stevens on behalf of the Lusby post.
Ude and Sue Mumper, who are also active in the auxiliary, and Millerโs grandson, Bryan, provided written endorsements for her nomination.
โWe could not list all that Carol has done for our post, our community and our service members over the past years in 300 words or less,โ Stevens declared in his submission to the judges. The list of Millerโs contributions included providing gift boxes for soldiers, organizing childrenโs parties for the neighborhood, cooking for all types of post fundraisers and patriotic occasions, and โadoptingโ a member of the Charlotte Hall Veteranโs Home.
โShe is front and center when it comes to enhancing the lives of veterans,โ Ude stated.
โShe has been volunteering at the Legion for as long as I can remember and she doesnโt show any signs of slowing down yet,โ Bryan Miller stated. โShe is the heart of the Legion in anybodyโs eyes.โ
