Tuesday proved to be Carol Millerโ€™s special day. Unfortunately, Miller spent Sept. 25 in the hospital. It was her protรฉgรฉ, Susan K. Shryock Ude, who stepped forward to accept Millerโ€™s award as Calvertโ€™s โ€œMost Beautiful.โ€ Miller was one of 13 individuals nominated for the 2012 โ€œCalvert You are Beautifulโ€ honor, which recognizes the communityโ€™s volunteers. Any citizen or organization may nominate an individual for the honor. A panel of judges then selects one of the nominees as Calvertโ€™s Most Beautiful.

Calvert County Commissionersโ€™ President Gerald W. โ€œJerryโ€ Clark [R] said the ceremony is one of his favorite annual events. โ€œYou all go the extra mile and take the extra time,โ€ said Clark to the honorees who gathered with family and friends at Calvert Pines Senior Center Auditorium for the afternoon ceremony. โ€œYou all make Calvert County a beautiful place to call home.โ€

โ€œWe [commissioners] are always impressed and amazed,โ€ said Commissioner Susan Shaw [R]. โ€œWe live in a very generous place.โ€

Among the nominated were individuals who give considerable time time to the local hospice, service clubs, dog kennels, adult day care, the Red Cross, the Girl Scouts, Calvert Marine Museum, the countyโ€™s master gardener program and Little League.

Miller, the American Legion Post 274 Auxiliary president, was nominated by Nate Stevens on behalf of the Lusby post.

Ude and Sue Mumper, who are also active in the auxiliary, and Millerโ€™s grandson, Bryan, provided written endorsements for her nomination.

โ€œWe could not list all that Carol has done for our post, our community and our service members over the past years in 300 words or less,โ€ Stevens declared in his submission to the judges. The list of Millerโ€™s contributions included providing gift boxes for soldiers, organizing childrenโ€™s parties for the neighborhood, cooking for all types of post fundraisers and patriotic occasions, and โ€œadoptingโ€ a member of the Charlotte Hall Veteranโ€™s Home.

โ€œShe is front and center when it comes to enhancing the lives of veterans,โ€ Ude stated.

โ€œShe has been volunteering at the Legion for as long as I can remember and she doesnโ€™t show any signs of slowing down yet,โ€ Bryan Miller stated. โ€œShe is the heart of the Legion in anybodyโ€™s eyes.โ€
