A Brief History Of The U.S. Marine Corps

The United States Marine Corps traces its origins to Nov. 10, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized two battalions of Marines to serve alongside the United States Navy during the Revolutionary War. Known as the Continental Marines, they were trained to fight on both land and sea — often serving as sharpshooters aboard ships.

The Corps was disbanded after the war in 1783 but re-established on July 11, 1798, when President John Adams signed an act creating the United States Marine Corps as a permanent force. Since then, the Navy and Marines have remained close partners, ready to deploy anywhere in defense of the nation.

In 1921, Commandant Maj. Gen. John A. Lejeune declared Nov. 10 as the official Marine Corps birthday, honoring its original founding. The tradition of the Marine Corps Birthday Ball began a few years later, featuring the now-famous cake-cutting ceremony — a symbol of passing knowledge from one generation of Marines to the next.

Today, Marines around the world celebrate this date with pride, remembering 250 years of courage, loyalty, and service under the banner of “Semper Fidelis” — Always Faithful.
