LA PLATA, Md. — The Charles County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a letter of support on June 10 backing the Pomonkey High School Alumni Association’s application for an African American Heritage Preservation Grant. The grant would aid efforts to restore and preserve the historically significant Pomonkey High School building in Bryans Road.
Located at 4295 Livingston Road, Indian Head, MD 20640, the former school building served as the only high school for African American students in Charles County prior to desegregation. Built in 1957, Pomonkey High School remains a symbol of educational progress and community strength during segregation in Southern Maryland.
If awarded, the African American Heritage Preservation Grant will fund critical repair and restoration projects at the original school building, which currently functions as an active community space and historical site. The funding is administered through the Maryland Historical Trust in partnership with the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture.
According to the commissioners’ signed letter of support, the restoration of Pomonkey High School “will ensure that its legacy continues to inspire future generations, and that the building remains a focal point for heritage tourism and educational initiatives in our county.”
The project aligns with the county’s broader goals for cultural preservation and community development, particularly those outlined in its Historic Preservation Plan.
