LA PLATA, Md. Westlake High School track star Christian Wilbon added another milestone to his already historic career this week as the Board of Charles County Commissioners formally recognized him as the most decorated athlete in county history.

During Tuesday’s open legislative session, the commissioners presented Wilbon with a Certificate of Achievement Award honoring his accomplishments both on the track and in the classroom.

The award was presented by Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins II, Esq., who praised Wilbon’s extraordinary combination of athletic success and academic excellence.

“Christian Wilbon represents the absolute pinnacle of what a student-athlete can achieve,” Collins said. “To rewrite the athletic record books of Charles County while maintaining complete academic mastery is a monumental feat. He has set a new standard of excellence for Southern Maryland, and it is our distinct privilege to honor his historic contributions to our community.”

Wilbon’s high school career has been marked by a remarkable list of accomplishments. Over the course of his time at Westlake, he earned more than 300 athletic medals and became a four-time Maryland State High School Track and Field champion. He also earned multiple All-American honors at both Adidas and Nike national competitions.

Known for his performances in the 55-meter, 100-meter and 200-meter sprint events, Wilbon established himself as one of the most accomplished athletes ever produced by Charles County.

His achievements extended beyond athletics. While competing at an elite level, Wilbon maintained a perfect 5.0 GPA and received approximately $1.7 million in scholarship offers from 30 colleges and universities across the country.

Earlier this year, Wilbon made history as the first athlete from Westlake High School to be recruited and accepted into an Ivy League institution. He has committed to continue his academic and athletic career at Columbia University, where he will compete in Division I track and field.

The Certificate of Achievement joins a growing list of honors Wilbon has received throughout his career, including multiple Maryland governor’s citations and Maryland Senate citations recognizing both his accomplishments and his impact on the community.

For many in Charles County, Wilbon’s recognition represents more than individual success. It serves as a reminder of the talent, dedication and potential found within Southern Maryland’s student-athletes.

As he prepares for the next chapter of his journey at Columbia University, Wilbon leaves behind a legacy that may stand for years to come — not only as a champion on the track but as a model of excellence in the classroom and the community.
