
La Plata, MD – Today the Charles County Board of Commissioners are issuing an official statement condemning the law enforcement actions that led to the death of George Floyd and many others before him. Commissioners also reaffirmed their commitment to racial equality and fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion throughout the community.
“We are disheartened, angered, and frustrated by the tragic way that George Floyd died while in police custody,” stated Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins, II, Esq. “We grieve along with his family, and all those who have been affected by racial injustice embedded in so many areas of our society. From healthcare, to education, employment, housing, and economic disparities, we must do our part as local leaders to pursue changes that address these inequalities and inequities.”
Commissioners expressed their support for citizens who are peacefully protesting these actions and demanding change, both locally and across the country. The community is encouraged to exercise their First Amendment rights by maintaining a civil dialogue at public protests.
