CHARLES COUNTY, Md. — Nineteen new students are preparing to enter Charles County’s fire and emergency medical services cadet program as local officials work to build the next generation of emergency responders.
Volunteer Fire and EMS Coordinator Bill Smith announced the enrollment numbers during the Charles County Board of Fire and Rescue Commissioners’ July meeting.
The program will include 19 first-year cadets and nine returning students during the upcoming school year.
The nine second-year students will spend the school year completing emergency medical technician training. The first-year students will begin with a 911 telecommunications course offered through a partnership with the Charles County Department of Emergency Services.
The program allows students to learn about emergency response, communications and medical care while still in school.
Charles County also increased its property tax incentive for eligible volunteer firefighters and EMS members from $500 to $2,500. Smith said an addendum reflecting the increased incentive will be sent to volunteers who did not see it included on their initial tax bills.
