Charles County Public Library Upgrades Hotspot Program, Ends Chromebook Bundles

LA PLATA, Md. — Charles County Public Library (CCPL) is upgrading its mobile hotspot program, enhancing a vital service that provides internet access to residents without reliable home connectivity.

The upgrade includes replacing older hotspot models with newer equipment to improve speed, reliability and coverage. During the transition period, the library notes that users may experience temporary reductions in device availability or brief service disruptions.

Mobile hotspots are free to borrow for anyone age 16 or older with a full-access CCPL library card in good standing. Each device includes unlimited data and is filtered in accordance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act. Hotspots are not renewable and must be returned on time to avoid delays in access for others. However, if another device is available upon return, patrons may check one out again. Each hotspot can support up to 10 devices connected simultaneously.

The service is available through all CCPL branches, including the Mobile Library. No overdue fines apply, though users may be responsible for replacement costs if devices are lost or damaged.

The program supports a wide range of users across Charles County, including students completing school assignments, job-seekers submitting applications, seniors attending telehealth appointments and families in rural or underserved areas without broadband access.

Program Change Notice: Chromebook & Mobile Hotspot Bundles Ended

CCPL’s Chromebook and Mobile Hotspot Bundle checkout service officially ended on May 5, 2025, due to unsustainable program costs.
