LA PLATA, Md. – Charles County Government is the recipient of the 2020 Maryland Association of Counties (MACo) and Academy for Excellence in Local Governance’s County Innovation Award, recognizing the county’s Climate Change Preparedness Program. The award is presented to an urban and a rural county each year for addressing issues in their communities and serving the needs of resident in ways that are ‘outside of the box.’
“I am pleased that Charles County has been presented this award and recognized for our work to protect the environment and our community,” said Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins, II, Esq. “It is an honor to be recognized as a leading voice for local government in the statewide climate change discussion.”
Charles County’s Climate Change Preparedness Program is a whole-of-government approach to addressing an increasingly acute community challenge. The program focuses on mitigation by reducing our carbon footprint while lowering fixed expenses and attracting outside investment. It also works to increase the county’s ability to adapt to a changing climate by building unprecedented competency for climate-smart decision-making among its workforce and reorganizing to most efficiently address the problem.
