maryland scam alert

MARYLAND – We want to make you aware of a recurring scam that has resurfaced in recent weeks. Several providers have reported receiving suspicious phone calls from individuals claiming to be parents moving to Maryland from out of state who wish to enroll their child in care.

The caller often says they will mail a deposit or registration hold check to secure a spot. Once the provider deposits the check, the scammer calls back claiming to have changed their plans and asks for a refund—usually through Venmo, Cash App, Zelle, or another digital payment service. A few days later, the bank determines that the original check was fraudulent, leaving the provider responsible for the funds that were refunded.

Please remember:

  • Do not send refunds until you have verified that a check has fully cleared with your bank.
  • Be cautious when communicating with anyone you haven’t met or verified as a legitimate parent.
  • Avoid accepting deposits from unknown individuals via mailed checks or requests involving money transfers.
  • Report any suspicious calls to your local police department and notify the LOCATE: Child Care (MCCRNinfo@Marylandfamilynetwork.org) if you receive one.

Unfortunately, this scam has occurred a few times over the years, and we want to ensure all providers are aware and protected.

Maryland Family Network works hard to keep bogus information and scammers off of LOCATE: Child Care. When you alert them to possible fraud, you’re not just protecting your program, you’re helping to protect all child care providers.
