St. Maryโs County is gearing up for its 20th annual rebuilding day, set for April 24, 2010. Every year in April volunteers tackle problems such as leaking roofs, faulty heaters and crumbling stairs to allow elderly and disabled homeowners to safely remain in their own homes. This year Christmas in April will repair many homes; 23 homes were rebuilt in 2009.ย ย
Preparations have begun to sign up house captains, area coordinators, skilled trades, and other volunteers. Volunteers will also build or repair wheelchair ramps, repair or replace windows and doors, and caulk windowpanes.ย
Skilled volunteers such as electricians, roofers, carpenters and plumbers are needed to make the event successful.ย
From 1990 to 2009, Christmas in April, St. Maryโs County, Maryland, Inc. volunteers have repaired over 564 homes and 13 community nonprofit facilities; 31,800 people have shared their services.ย
Individuals or organizations wishing to volunteer should contact Mary Ann Chasen at (301) 863-2905 or by e-mail at mary.chasen@christmasinaprilsmc.org.
