Bomb technicians with the State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office Bomb Squad were called to the St. Maryโ€™s County Landfill located at 44595 St. Andrews Church Road this morning after employees found what appeared to be a military projectile.

Investigators learned employees while sifting through discarded metals came across the projectile. Bomb technicians after determining the projectile was a military round contacted the military for assistance. Military explosive technicians with the 316th EOD Unit out of Andrews Air Force Base responded.

Further investigation determined the shell, which measured 16 inches long by 8 inches round was a civil war era projectile. Based on this examination and with the condition of the round, it was safely moved to a remote area. Military bomb technicians in conjunction with bomb technicians with the State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office Bomb Squad safely countered charged the round.

State Fire Marshal William Barnard โ€œcautions Maryland residentโ€™s that finds or has in their possessions munitions, they may still be live and potentially dangerous.โ€

The St. Maryโ€™s County Sheriffโ€™s Office assisted explosive technicians.ย
