A Calvert County service club dedicated to making the lives of children better received a traditional financial boost from a local business Friday, Jan. 24.
Members of the Calvert Kiwanis Club happily accepted a check for $5,150 from Bayside Toyota/Chevrolet Treasurer Andrew Wanamaker.
Traditionally, the dealershipโs contribution is based on the number of vehicles sold during November.

The club uses the money at Christmastime to aid children from deserving families in need purchase gifts.ย โItโs a joyous experience,โ said club member Greg Bowen of the Christmas shopping experience with the children.ย Club President George Leah Jr. said the Kiwanis provided the cash for Christmas shopping to 48 children identified through the Tree of Angels program.
ย
โWe do the easy part,โ said club member Dwight Williams, after thanking Wanamaker and the dealership for providing a significant amount of the clubโs Christmas project.
ย
Leah pointed out that last year was able to use some of the dealershipโs annual contribution to purchase computers for the Safe Harbor shelter in Prince Frederick. โThey were just ecstatic,โ said Leah, noting that residents of the shelter are now able to find employment through Internet searches.
