Join Calvert Memorial Hospital for a night dedicated to breast cancer awareness at the Regency Furniture Stadium, home to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball team, during the Aug. 13 game against Long Island. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

Patients, employees, volunteers, medical staff, their families and the community are invited to take part in what promises to be an exciting evening. “Our goal is to challenge local families to think about their health, to get involved in wellness activities and to show their support for the Center for Breast Care at Calvert Memorial Hospital,” said Kasia Sweeney, director of public relations at CMH.

Doors open at 6:05 p.m. Plan to come early and visit the many displays along the promenade featuring information about the breast center, healthy eating, diabetes, osteoporosis, important health screenings – like your annual mammogram, cholesterol and more. Wear a pink 5K CMH Breast Cancer Challenge T-shirt or the hospital’s signature teal color and be entered for great door prize drawings.

The Aug. 13 event at the ballpark is intended to help raise funds for the early detection and treatment of breast cancer in Southern Maryland. General admission seating is $13. Click here to buy tickets online for the game (enter cmhfoundation as the group name) and a portion of your ticket price will be donated to the breast center.

The breast center, which opened in January, brings together a team of breast health experts – including radiologists from Johns Hopkins, with an experienced navigator, backed by the latest technology in one convenient location. It offers Southern Maryland women the same level of care they would find in a major metropolitan area right here in our local community.

Earlier this summer, the hospital kicked off the CMH 5K Breast Cancer Challenge. The 12-week healthy lifestyle campaign is designed to help local families get fit and have fun while raising funds for the breast center. Some 193 men, women and children ages seven to 82 have already signed up to take the challenge that will continue throughout the summer and wrap up with a 5K run/walk in Solomons on Oct. 2.

The challenge is open to everyone – local organizations, businesses, families and individuals. It’s free to sign up for the challenge. To register, call the hospital’s KeepWell Center at 410-535-8233 or 301-855-1012, ext. 8233. Participants get a free step-by-step guide to good health plus weekly email reminders to keep them on track.

“You can’t control some things that put you at risk for breast cancer, such as your age and being female,” said Margaret Fowler, director of community wellness at CMH, “but there are changes that you can make – like exercising more, eating healthier and getting screenings – that lower your risk for many chronic diseases.” World Gym Fitness Centers along with Calvert Medical Imaging Center (CMIC) and the Brandon Greening Foundation for Breast Cancer Awareness have partnered with the hospital to sponsor the breast cancer challenge.

Participants who donate $5 to the Center for Breast Care when they sign up for the challenge get pink shoelaces. A $10 donation entitles you to a pink CMH 5K Breast Cancer Challenge T-Shirt. Challenge participants also get a $10 discount on the registration fee for the Oct. 2 run/walk.

Additionally, the breast center and CMIC are offering M&M Fridays in August. Sign up for a mammogram at CMIC on any Friday in August and get a free 15-minute seated massage after the exam plus a free osteoporosis screening, complimentary refreshments and special gifts. To m
