FLOOD IN SOUTHERN MARYLAND

LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The National Weather Service on Tuesday issued a Coastal Flood Watch for St. Mary’s County, effective from Wednesday evening, Oct. 29, through Thursday evening, Oct. 30, and set to expire at 12 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31. A separate Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. tonight.

Forecasters expect one to two feet of tidal inundation in low-lying areas during the watch period, with tides running 2½ to 3 feet above normal Wednesday evening through Thursday evening. During Tuesday’s advisory, up to a half-foot of inundation is possible with tides 1½ to 2 feet above normal.

Impacts escalate at 3.5 feet, when water covers roads on St. George Island, reaches yards and nears structures; flooding is also reported at marinas off the St. Mary’s River, Smith Creek and Jutland Creek. At 4.0 feet, low spots along Palmer Road can see at least a foot of water.

High tide benchmarks for Oct. 28–29:

  • Point Lookout: 6:59 p.m. Tuesday; 7:22 a.m. Wednesday
  • Piney Point: 7:34 p.m. Tuesday; 8:18 a.m. Wednesday
  • Coltons Point: 8:10 p.m. Tuesday; 8:54 a.m. Wednesday

Officials urge drivers to avoid flooded roadways and plan alternate routes during peak water levels. Boaters should secure vessels and check lines ahead of the higher tides.
