LA PLATA, Md. — Four years after 18-year-old Jazmiah Zyri Nelson was fatally shot while riding a four-wheeler in a La Plata neighborhood, investigators are renewing their plea for information — and offering up to $10,000 for tips that lead to an arrest.
It was just after 11:30 p.m. on May 22, 2021, when Nelson and two acquaintances were riding through the 600 block of Pomonkey Way, a residential area lined with townhomes. As they passed through the neighborhood, gunfire broke out. Nelson was struck in the upper body. She was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she later died from her injuries.
Another young woman in the group was grazed by a bullet and treated at a local hospital.
Detectives with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office say the case remains active, and they believe someone in the community has information that could help solve it.
“We’re still asking the public to come forward,” a department spokesperson said in a recent update. “Even the smallest detail could be what helps move this case forward.”
Nelson’s death shook the community and left her family searching for answers. Authorities have not identified a suspect or motive publicly, but have emphasized that they do not believe the shooting was random.
The reward for information — now totaling up to $10,000 — is being offered through Charles County Crime Solvers. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
