CALIFORNIA, Md. — A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for the region as dangerously cold wind chills are expected to continue through Friday morning.
The advisory, issued Thursday afternoon by the National Weather Service office in Baltimore/Washington, warns that wind chills could drop as low as 9 degrees below zero in parts of the region.
The advisory covers Washington, D.C., and portions of central, northeast, northern and southern Maryland, as well as northern Virginia, and is in effect from 7 p.m. Thursday until 11 a.m. Friday.
Forecasters warn that exposure to these conditions can lead to frostbite and hypothermia, particularly if skin is left unprotected for extended periods of time.
The National Weather Service said additional cold weather advisories or warnings may be issued at times through the end of the week as the region remains locked in an Arctic air mass.
Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, cover exposed skin and check on vulnerable individuals during the prolonged cold spell.
