LA PLATA, Md. – Commissioner President Murphy ordered the county flag to be flown half-staff effective sunrise through sunset on Saturday, March 31 to honor Ruth Louise “Weeze” Abell for her service to Charles County.
Louise Abell, of Pisgah, MD, passed away at her home, surrounded by her loving family members on March 22, 2018, after a brave battle with cancer. She was 94 years old.
โWeezeโ was born in Six Mile Run, PA, on August 9, 1923, to the late Shannon Davis
and Clarice Davis. She is also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Robert Abell; her sister, Mary Jane Bollman; and her brother, George Davis. She is survived by her son, George โRobbieโ Abell (Wanda), of Pisgah; daughters, Donna Feaganes (Gene), of Pisgah; Bonnie Elder (Kevin), of La Plata; grandchildren: Deanna Shnayer, Cathi Graff, Robbie Abell Jr., Kim Hancock, Craig Elder, Karen Holdsworth; her loving sister-in-law, Faye Davis; many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
When she and her family first moved from Pennsylvania to Indian Head in the early 1940s, she worked at the Indian Head Naval Base, where she met her future husband, Robert Abell. After raising her children in their loving home, she worked at Elyโs Department Store for a number of years until retirement.
Throughout her life, she devoted her time to service to the Marbury Church of God, the Tenth District Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and the Charles County Fair. On any given week, she could be found cooking for Bingo at the Fire Department, volunteering at the Charles County Fair, and singing at the Marbury Church of God Choir services. While she was well known for her cooking (especially her coconut cake, potato salad, macaroni salad, and vegetable soup), others will remember her for her kindness to friends, family, and the community. Her home was always open to family and friends who were in need of a hot meal, an encouraging word, or a place to stay.
Friends will be received on Saturday, March 31 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 12 p.m. at the Marbury Church of God, 4825 Bicknell Road, Marbury, MD, with Reverend Robert Buehler officiating. Interment will be immediately following at Park Hill Cemetery, in Marbury, MD.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be sent in her honor to the Marbury Church of God, 4825 Bicknell Road, Marbury, MD 20658 or to the Tenth District Volunteer Fire Department, 7035 Poor House Road, Indian Head, MD 20640.
