Maryland Has Created About 18,000 Jobs In 2026: What To Know

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Estimates released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that Maryland has added around 18,000 jobs since 2026 began. According to the data, about 4,000 nonfarm jobs were added in May alone, while 900 more were added in June, indicating that the state’s job market could be starting to stabilize after tens of thousands of jobs were cut by the federal government over the last two years.

According to the Office of Gov. Wes Moore, about 25,000 federal jobs were affected or eliminated in 2025 after the Trump administration took office. Thousands of positions were cut as part of a broader national crackdown that aimed to shrink various federal agencies.

A significant amount of the federal government operates out of the Old Line State, causing more than 10,000 Marylanders to lose their jobs during October and November 2025 alone.

In June 2026, the industries with the largest increase in jobs included government and education. On the other hand, industries like manufacturing, transportation and retail trade accounted for the most job losses throughout the month.

Accelerating job growth in Maryland has been an ongoing effort by the state government. For example, the Maryland Department of Commerce has offered tax and finance incentives to businesses, making it easier to flourish in the uncertainty of recent years.

“Our incentive programs are delivering real results—empowering local entrepreneurs, investing in our workforce, and giving companies a reason to grow right here in Maryland,” Gov. Moore said. “As we head into the next fiscal year, we’re doubling down on building new pathways to work, wages, and wealth for all.”

Last June, it was reported that Maryland’s total unemployment rate fell to 4.3%, which is right above the national average of 4.2%. The latest figures suggest that Maryland’s job market is beginning to stabilize, though the state is still trying to recover from 2025’s lost jobs.
