NORTH BEACH, Md. — The Arts Council, in partnership with Empact Art, invites community members to participate in a collaborative workshop as part of the North Beach Sculpture Project, a public art initiative focused on cancer awareness and honoring those personally affected by cancer.

The free community workshops will take place Sunday, June 8, with two sessions scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch, 4100 5th St., North Beach.

During the workshops, participants will create mosaic flowers using yellow and pink glass pieces. The flowers will later be incorporated into a new 4-foot sculpture for the North Beach Sculpture Garden. The sculpture depicts two figures embracing — whether interpreted as a couple, parent and child or close friends — symbolizing connection, compassion and support through life’s most difficult moments.

Each flower created during the workshops will serve as a tribute to love, hope and remembrance.

Glass pieces will be pre-cut, although some additional shaping with nippers may be needed. Artists from the library team will guide participants through the process. Designs will be arranged on contact paper to securely hold each mosaic in place.

The workshops are open to adults and children ages 8 and older. Participation is free, but advance RSVPs are required. Drop-ins will not be accepted.

Participants may RSVP by visiting www.calvertarts.org/events and selecting “Community Workshop.”

The Arts Council partnered with Empact Art, a nonprofit organization focused on building community and fostering connections through public art projects.
