ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman today reminded Maryland taxpayers of the tax filing options available to them ahead of the April 15, 2025, state and federal personal income tax return filing deadline.
This year, Maryland joined 24 other states in offering the IRS Direct File program. The secure tax filing platform allows eligible taxpayers to file both their federal and state taxes online at no cost. Direct File allows eligible taxpayers to import existing information from their IRS account, and from their federal return into their state return, making the process more efficient. Direct File is accessible from desktops and mobile devices and provides support for taxpayers throughout the process via live chat maintained by the IRS for federal returns, and by partners at Code for America through the state platform.
“One of my key priorities as Comptroller is making government work better, and part of that is giving Marylanders better options when it comes to filing their taxes,” Comptroller Lierman said. “Direct File is a better way to file because it makes tax filing easy and free, which equals more time saved, more money kept, and fewer headaches during what can be a stressful time of year. We are excited that thousands of Marylanders have chosen Direct File, and we hope to build on this momentum for free online filing over the next week and in years to come.”
An estimated 30 million Americans, including an estimated 870,000 Marylanders are eligible to file their taxes through Direct File. Marylanders interested in filing using Direct File are encouraged to review their eligibility using the eligibility checker tool.
The Office of the Comptroller partners with several community partners to support Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites across the state and also provides free tax assistance by appointment at one of the agency’s 11 branch offices or virtually. So far, the agency has processed nearly 1.7 million personal income tax returns, slightly more than at this point in 2024. The agency has also processed more than 1.1 million refunds worth an estimated $1.6 billion.
Marylanders who owe taxes must pay by the April 15 deadline to avoid additional interest or penalties.
