The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs scored seven runs in the top of the 6th inning to break open a tie game and trounce the Long Island Ducks 10-1 in the opening game of their three-game series.

Gaby Hernandez (7-9) earned the victory for Southern Maryland holding the Ducks to a run on five hits with six strikeouts in seven innings. Bobby Blevins (9-4) suffered the loss allowing seven runs, three earned in 5.2 innings.

In a 1-1 tie, Southern Maryland sent 11 batters to the plate during their seven-run top of the 6th inning. Jermaine Mitchell gave the Blue Crabs the lead when he scored on a wild pitch by Blevins. C.J. Ziegler and Mike Schwartz provided consecutive RBI singles and then an error by Joash Brodin allowed Ziegler to score. Bobby Stevens delivered the biggest blow of the inning with a bases-loaded, three-run triple to make it 8-1.

Mitchell and Steve Moss tacked on RBI singles in the 9th inning to polish off a 10-1 Southern Maryland victory.

The Blue Crabs continue their three-game series against the Long Island Ducks tomorrow evening at 7:05. Southern Maryland returns home to face the Somerset Patriots for their final home series of the season starting Tuesday September 16 at 7:05.
