DEATHTRAP, by Ira Levin, premiered on Broadway on February 26 1978. Its four-year run holds the record as the longest-running Broadway comedy thriller; it received a Tony nomination for Best Play.ย Lead actress Marian Seldes appeared in all 1,793 performances, winning herself a spot as โmost durable actressโ in the Guinness Book of World Records. The 1982 film version starred Christopher Reeve, Michael Caine, and Dyan Cannon.
This comedy-thriller is comprised of two acts of three scenes each, with one set, and five characters. This โplay within a playโ will keep the audience on the edge of its seat throughout. Let me preface this review by saying that although I may risk giving โtoo much awayโ here, itโs not enough simply to know the plot. The real thrill of the evening is in the mechanics of how things happen onstage in spite of knowing the plot. Even if you think you know whatโs coming next, I can guarantee that it wonโt be quite what you think youโre expecting, which is a credit to the director as well as to Mr. Levin.
