PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Dr. Andraè Townsel will reportedly be leaving his role as the superintendent of Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) to serve as a school superintendent in Hartford, Connecticut.
CCPS posted the following on its official Facebook page on the morning of July 2:
A message from the Calvert County Public Schools BOE President:
CCPS Community,
We want to acknowledge that Dr. Townsel has accepted a new position in Hartford, CT. While we recognize the significance of this professional opportunity and wish him well in his future endeavors, it is unfortunate that this news was not shared directly with staff and stakeholders prior to its public release.
We understand that transitions in leadership can raise questions and concerns. Please know that the Board of Education is meeting to seek legal counsel and to carefully consider the next steps. Our goal is to ensure continuity and a smooth transition as we prepare for the 2025-2026 school year.
We are committed to maintaining transparency and open communication throughout this process and will share updates as they become available.
Sincerely,
Jana Post, President
Calvert County Public Schools
According to reporting by the Hartford Courant, the Hartford Public Schools Board of Education voted Dr. Townsel in by unanimous vote at its July 1 meeting. Dr. Townsel was selected after a nationwide search.
Dr. Townsel has been the superintendent of CCPS since 2022, replacing Dr. Daniel Curry. He was appointed to a four-year term — meaning he’s leaving a year before his term is up.
In a statement shared publicly, Dr. Townsel said, “It has been my distinct honor and privilege to serve as superintendent of Calvert County Public Schools since July 2022.” He added, “I hope that, in some measure, my leadership has been a blessing to this community — as much as this community has been a blessing to me.”
