The crime of rape has been in the media most recently because of what happened in the small town of Steubenville, Ohio. If you didnโ€™t hear about it, this is a very close community in which their high school football team brings in 10,000 people for some games. They really live for this and Steubenville has produced some awesome teams that have won state championships.

The problem was now attention was brought to their community because an underage woman was raped by two underage football players. There was an underage party of 50 people or so and one female couldnโ€™t handle her liquor. What kid can at 15 or 16, let alone make smart decisions hence the reason we have a drinking age. Reports also mention that the victim was a bit of a partier, but I will comment more on this in a moment.

So instead of helping her home, telling her she is cutoff or contacting her parents they take her to another party. Then because she is throwing up in the streets and didnโ€™t want to ruin her blouse, it was removed. So now in bra and shorts she is passed out at a strangerโ€™s house.

One boy decides to violate her with his finger. Allegedly oral sex was also attempted. Someone else joins in and then other observers take pictures to send around to their friends. Apparently that equated to just fewer than 400,000 texts and over 300,000 photos shared with friends, strangers and pervs.

Wait a minute! So kids were watching someone harm another living person without intervening and sharing it with others like it was a Sports Center Top 10 play? Okay I just want to get that straight. Wait, WHAT?

What the hell is wrong with us? Nowadays adults can be seen not helping another person who is clearly in trouble. When did it become okay to not help out fellow man, or woman? Why are we so apathetic in this country? We are in this together and need to look out for one another.

Well the two boys were found guilty but that was not without a struggle to have justice served in this tight-knit community. Even the victim has been threatened on social media sites. Bottom line: regardless of who it is; what financial bracket you are in; what race you are; how famous you are or who your Daddy is, the law is the law.

So to clarify what rape is I searched online and I liked this definition that was posted on the Clark University website:

Rape / Sexual Assault
