Drayden, MD – An early-afternoon fire in St. Mary’s County caused significant damage to a 1989 Chevrolet Astro Van Thursday, Sept. 7, state investigators reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the blaze on Cherryfield Road in Drayden was discovered by local residents and reported at approximately 12:51 p.m.
“The vehicle was at the address to have work performed on it,” a deputy fire marshal reported. “A neighbor heard the horn to the vehicle going off periodically throughout the morning hours. The fire was determined to have been attributed to an electrical event in the vehicle’s dashboard.”
Damage to the van and its contents is estimated at $3,500. No injuries were reported. Five volunteer firefighters brought the blaze under control in 10 minutes.

Update 1:15 p.m.- The fire is out and units are on the scene still. The fire marshal is headed to the scene. Expect an extended fire department presence in the area until all investigation and cleanup are completed.
