Two recent newspaper articles have detailed what a hard time Marco Rubio is having since heโs been working on the โGang of 8โsโ immigration bill. It is no secret that, as columnist Michael J. Mishak states in hisย Washington Timesย article dated August 21, โSince he began championing immigration changes, his standing has slipped in some polls.โ ย And on August 30 Rubio faced hecklers during his speech at the opening session of a summit sponsored by the Americans for Prosperity Foundation who shouted out, โNo amnestyโ. Here is Rubioโs eloquent reply, quoted in Matea Goldโsย Washington Postย article dated August 31:ย โMy familyโs story is not just about them โ itโs about us. Itโs the story of millions of people before them and since who achieved here in this land what would have been impossible almost anywhere else. That is still who we are. Today there are millions of people among us, trying to do what my parents did for us and what your parents did for you.โ
As Iโve mentioned previously in this column, the proposed immigration bill is trying to encompass so many facets of the immigration issue that no one is going to ever be 100% satisfied. And the Republicans acknowledge the need to appeal to minorities in the 2014 and 2016 elections in order to be successful. Rubio has previously said, โNo one is going to vote for you if they think youโre going to deport their familyโ. Rubio is doing his best to walk a tightrope on this issue without diminishing his possible chances for a Presidential run in 2016. Itโs a tough spot for him to be in, but heโs doing what he believes is the right.
