Although itโ€™s a new year, itโ€™s looking like โ€œdeja-vu all over againโ€ as far as the media coverage of Republicans is concerned. The front page ofย The Washington Postโ€™sย January 5, 2014ย Metroย section featured an article by John Wagner titled โ€œMd. Elections on Minds of Lawmakers.โ€ This was a 29-paragraph article (I counted), with the first three-and-one-half paragraphs appearing on the front page, and the fourth paragraph continued on page 6 followed by the remaining paragraphs which comprised three columns right beneath a smiling photo of Gov. Oโ€™Malley.ย

Now, can you guess how many paragraphs of this article were devoted toย Republicanย candidates?…a grand total of three. And exactlyย whichย three paragraphs?…the last three. I am not making this up. Del Ron George claimed paragraph #27 all to himself; Harford Co. Executive David Craig shared paragraph #28 with his running-mate, Del. Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio, and the final paragraph โ€“ all five lines of paragraph #29 โ€“ was shared by Charles Lollar and (potential candidate) Larry Hogan (Mr. Hogan is delaying his announcement until later on this month).

Marylandโ€™s lawmakers have returned to Annapolis for the General Assembly Session as of today. Letโ€™s hope that the Republican candidates in this off-year election will receive more prominent coverage as the campaign progresses.
