In the just-released movie, โ€œLincoln,โ€ Daniel Day-Lewis, as the President, quotes the Greek mathematician Euclid. (The movie focuses on Lincolnโ€™s struggles to pass the 13thย amendment to the Constitution, abolishing slavery). He says: โ€œThings that are equal to the same thing are equal to each otherโ€.

Euclid was born around 300 B.C. in Alexandria, Egypt. He is considered to have been the most prominent mathematician of Greco-Roman antiquity, best known for his treatise on geometry. He set a standard for deductive reasoning and geometric instruction that endured โ€“ virtually without change – for over 2,000 years.

The two principal foundations of Freemasonry are Euclidโ€™s geometry (thus, the Masonic symbol of the compass and the square) and the Holy Bible. Lincolnโ€™s quote is truly poignant within the context of the movie. Following is a continuation of Euclidโ€™s words which I will leave you to ponder during this holiday seasonโ€ฆ

-โ€œThings equal to the same thing are equal;โ€

-โ€œIf equals are added to equals the wholes are equal;โ€

-โ€œIf equals are subtracted from equals, the remainders are equal;โ€

-โ€œThings that coincide with one another are equal; and

-โ€œThe whole is greater than a part.โ€

A blessed and safe Thanksgiving is wished for all.

Deepest sympathy is extended to St. Maryโ€™s County Commissioner Todd Morgan on the loss of his wife, Maria, on November 14. A memorial service to honor her memory is planned for a future date.
