SEABROOK, Md. — After more than a decade of serving as a gathering place for food, music and community, SoBe Restaurant & Lounge is preparing to close its doors.

Located along Greenbelt Road in Prince George’s County, SoBe has spent the last 12 years as more than just a restaurant. It became a familiar space where birthdays were celebrated, friendships were built and regulars felt at home — a spot that blended dining with culture and connection for many local residents.

The restaurant will close Sunday night, owner Anthony Simpson confirmed in an interview with WUSA9.

“It’s bittersweet,” Simpson said. “Sad for the community a little bit — we tried to anchor the community and of course the way that we do in serving good food and environment for people to come out.”

Since news of the closure began circulating online, community members have taken to social media to reflect on what SoBe meant to them over the years.

“Wow this is hard to believe,” one resident wrote. “It was a staple for so many years. Spent many a birthday dinner here.”

Others shared similar memories, describing SoBe as a first-date spot, a regular meeting place after work or somewhere to unwind on weekends — underscoring the restaurant’s role beyond its menu.

As Prince George’s County continues to evolve, the closing of long-standing local businesses like SoBe highlights the changing landscape many residents are navigating, where familiar spaces are becoming harder to hold onto.

While the restaurant’s physical space may soon be gone, its impact remains in the memories of those who walked through its doors over the years. For the community it served, SoBe’s legacy lives on in the moments shared, the conversations had and the sense of belonging it helped create.
