The 2013 Calvert County Fair is history and the five-day showcase will likely be remembered for beautiful early autumn weather, big crowds and an abundance of talent.

A teenage girl from Prince George’s County made a huge impression on fair patrons with a stirring rendition of “God Bless America.” Jennalyn Yon, 18 of Beltsville so moved the Saturday night, Sept. 28 crowd with her singing that the thunderous applause helped her earn the 2013 Calvert County Fair Idol title. The first runner-up in the vocal contest was Brandi Wightman of St. Leonard, a student at the College of Southern Maryland. Keanuu Smith-Brown of North Beach was declared the contest’s second runner-up.

The contest sponsor, G.H. Clark Jr. Contractors, awarded $1,000 to Yon, $500 to Wightman and $300 to Smith-Brown.

Fair officials reported the contest started with 26 contestants and was pared down to six after Friday evening’s competition.

Sunday, Sept. 29 was the last day of the fair. Active and retired military gained free admission to the fair.

Fairgoers were entertained by the Aerial Stunt Spectacular and Bill Yates and Country Gentlemen Tribute Band.
