With the growing movement toward eating healthy, fresh food gaining strength, the guide is an invaluable tool for those looking for local produce to enhance their culinary experience at home.
According to Katherine Stormont, Marketing, and Public Relations Specialist working with the Agricultural Development Commission, “There has been an interesting shift in people’s interest to buy and consume local produce and other farm products.”
Stormont went on to say that fresh local food just plain tastes better than something trucked in from 1500 miles away and artificially “ripened” with chemicals. She also indicated that a lot of roadside stands are misleading in that the consumer thinks they are purchasing local fresh vegetables and fruits when the operators drive to Baltimore and purchase goods for sale at local roadside stands.
The Farmers’ Market Guide now makes that virtually impossible for readers to be misled. Each market listed has pledged to sell local farm products and participates in the So Maryland, So Good program, which ensures products sold are from local farmers.
The guide also provides a detailed Harvest Guide letting consumers know what farm products are available by month. There is also a dynamic map showing each participating facility and those visiting the website can use the detailed search function to find exactly what they want with the click of a mouse.
