RIVA, Md. – A  24-year-old motorcyclist died after a Wednesday afternoon crash in Riva.

According to the Anne Arundel County Police, just before 3:30 pm, Joseph Anthony Disciorio III was riding his Kawasaki Ninja Motorcycle southbound on Riva Road. He went into the center lane to attempt to illegally pass a vehicle. The report said Disciorio was traveling at a high rate of speed.

Another driver was in the process of making a left turn from eastbound Tarpon Road onto northbound Riva Road. Disciorio hit the left rear of the vehicle with his motorcycle.

He was thrown from the bike. Disciorio, of Annapolis, was transported to University of Maryland Shock Trauma where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the other vehicle was not injured. The report said the primary cause of the crash was speeding and improper passing. The Traffic Safety Section of the Anne Arundel County Police is handling the investigation.

On average, there are 70 deaths and 1,400 injuries involving motorcycles each year in Maryland.

The National Highway Safety administration says motorcyclists are about 28 times as likely to die in an accident that drivers and passengers in motor vehicles. They remind motorcyclists to always obey the rules of the road.
