LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — A 72-year-old Lexington Park man faces felony charges following a reported residential assault that authorities say left a victim injured and prompted a law enforcement response in Lexington Park. Authorities allege the incident resulted in visible injuries inside the home, leading to charges of second-degree child abuse and second-degree assault. The case is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in March 2026.

According to charging documents, Kenneth A. Smith, 72, of Lexington Park, has been charged with second-degree child abuse, a felony, and second-degree assault following an incident reported Feb. 19, 2026, in a residential area of the community.

According to authorities, deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to an assault call at a residence. Upon arrival, deputies reported observing the victim with visible injuries and blood present on both the victim and the floor of the home. Law enforcement officials reported that the victim allegedly identified Smith as the individual responsible for the assault.

According to police reports, the victim agreed to medical treatment and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Smith was taken into custody and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center.

Court records indicate Smith was later released on personal recognizance following the incident. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 16, 2026.

Under Maryland law, second-degree child abuse is a felony offense that carries a maximum penalty of up to 15 years of imprisonment. Second-degree assault is generally classified as a misdemeanor and may carry a maximum penalty of up to 10 years of imprisonment and/or applicable fines upon conviction.
