CHARLES COUNTY, Md. – A state organization recently recognized two Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) fifth-grade students for their accomplishments in gifted and talented education.
The Maryland Gifted and Talented Advisory Council named Audra Dee of Mary
H. Matula Elementary School as the recipient of the Individual Outstanding Student
Accomplishment in Gifted and Talented Education Award.
Riley Daniels, a T.C. Martin Elementary School fifth-grade student, was given an
honorable mention award by the council for individual outstanding student
accomplishment in gifted and talented education.
Dee and Daniels were recognized in the upper elementary category, and were
the only two upper elementary students in the state who were honored by the council
this year.Â
To be considered, students must demonstrate exceptional performance in
specific academic areas, participate in additional clubs and activities outside of the
gifted and talented program, and have received kudos for their accomplishments by the
school system or local, state or national organizations.
Members of the Maryland Gifted and Talented Advisory Council are appointed by
the State Superintendent of Schools to expand opportunities for students who receive
gifted and talented services. The council advises the state superintendent on how the
state can better identify and support gifted and talented students who come from
various backgrounds.
