Owings, MD – A two-alarm early morning fire in Calvert County resulted in heavy damage to a commercial auto repair facility, state investigators reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the blaze on Industrial Drive in Owings was reported at approximately 4:51 a.m. by a passing motorist.
“The fire was the result of discarded smoking materials in a flower pot in front of the building,” a deputy state fire marshal reported. “The fire caused heavy damage to the exterior front of the building. The fire also extended to the interior, causing moderate damage to the building’s contents. There was no one at the business at the time the fire was discovered.”
The business—Chesapeake Auto Repair—sustained a total of $350,000 damage. Fifty firefighters were dispatched to the blaze and brought it under control in 20 minutes.
